Connor is good-humored and quick-witted, though many of the nuances of his personality seem to vary by his company. He is comfortable in both noble company and among the common folk, and he is content wearing either mask. He is a very confident man who has always been praised for his looks and his skills and can thus be occasionally arrogant. He is very proud and independent and hates to feel as though he’s being led around by the nose, resulting from the years of occasionally heavy-handed guidance from his uncle.
He’s fiercely loyal to his bannorn and his family and is willing to make sacrifices to improve their lot and standing. Always conscious of appearing weak, he is also not forgiving to those who cross him.
Connor was born on the 20th day of Cloudreach in 8 Dragon to Sorcha and Ewan Ainsley. He was born three hours before his twin brother, Ciaran. The boys were identical, though in adulthood Ciaran is noticeably more muscular.
Connor’s mother served as the Bann of Blackwood, a bannorn in Gwaren that abuts the Brecilian Forest. It’s one of the teyrnir’s many sources of timber. Sorcha Ainsley was a shrewd and clever woman who did a great deal to increase the size and influence of her bannorn during her rule, and her freeholders prospered and loved her for it.
When Connor was six years old, Sorcha died giving birth to a daughter. The girl only survived for a few weeks before following her mother. The bannorn faced a troubled few years as Ewan Ainsley and Sorcha’s brother, Padraig Brynmor, squabbled over who should take the title of bann. It was a brief dispute, as the Brynmors historically held the title. Ewan was well-loved by the people, but he was only a huntsman of Chasind blood whose chief concern was his sons’ inheritances. The men reached a decision amenable to both: Padraig, who was childless, would serve as bann only until Sorcha’s children came of age.
Despite the tension between his father and uncle, Connor’s childhood was mostly a pleasant one. His uncle prepared the boys for their inheritance, and their father taught them to hunt and shoot. Ewan and the twins spent many enjoyable days and weeks roaming the Brecilian, though they were careful not to stray in too deep or too near areas where the Dalish were rumored to travel.
Though only the elder by a matter of hours, Connor quickly became the clear choice to inherit his mother’s title. He was a clever, lively boy who quickly grasped the nuances of diplomacy and politics and settling squabbles among the freeholders.
At seventeen, he took the title of bann from his uncle, who stayed on as his chief advisor. He was also married that year to Noreen Parry, a union that allowed Blackwood to annex the small neighboring bannorn of Breckinridge. Given the proximity of their bannorns, Noreen and Connor had known each other since childhood. They never had any real attraction to the other, but they shared enough friendly affection for both parties to be content with the arrangement.
The years leading up to the Blight were quiet ones. Connor’s people were content under his rule, and he managed to court several more freeholders away from his neighbors. Noreen never managed to conceive during their marriage, which had become a point of contention between Connor and his uncle by the time the Blight came to Ferelden.
No one in Ferelden was unaffected by it. The contingent of men sent to Ostagar under Ciaran’s command was almost entirely slaughtered. Ciaran himself was believed dead for the greater part of a year before he managed to return to Blackwood in the company of a handful of other survivors. The bannorn itself did not see many darkspawn, save for the occasional stragglers. For Connor, the worst thing that happened during the Blight had nothing to do with darkspawn. Noreen took ill with a fever and passed away within a fortnight.
He mourned the death of his friend and partner, but Gwaren quickly had greater concerns. The downfall of Teyrn Loghain and the subsequent vacuum left by the empty teyrn’s seat left the future of Gwaren uncertain. Though tempted, Connor made no real attempt to take the title for himself. He was careful to observe which way the wind was blowing, and Blackwood gave its full support to Banns Roderick Yorath and Constance Carringstone in their bid for the title.
Since then, Connor has only become more comfortable in his role as bann. He spends a great deal of his time in Denerim, making connections and generally enjoying being in close proximity to the seat of power.
