“Well then, lass.” Arl Eideard drained his glass and set it down, along with more than enough coin to cover the tab and make the barmaid very, very happy. Maeva shimmied out of the booth and stood up, making room for the humans. “Let’s see what an insider and an outsider can show this new lad about his new city. Perhaps I can stand one of you to place the bet for me.”
Maeva perked up with interest while Lady Daire took the bottle of liquor that the arl had paid for. "You give me the coin, and I'll double it. Not that you're hurting for it, I'm sure."
Lady Daire gestured towards the door with a grin: "After you, Maeva. I'm always game to learn something new about Denerim."
Maeva never missed out on a chance to show off. “I’m guessing you know the Palace District and Fort Drakon and all that well enough,” she said. That was where noble types spent most of their time when they weren’t visiting the market for a little shopping or drinking. With Fort Drakon the highest point in the city, the city went from fancy-schmancy to slums roughly as its elevation decreased. Maeva made her way out of the tavern, trusting the others to follow. “The docks are where the city gets its lifeblood. New people and things coming in and out all the time… tons of brothels and taverns for the sailors, and warehouses for their goods. It’s not really the best place to be after dark if you aren’t prepared to throw a few punches.” Or stab someone, but Maeva wasn’t going to admit to that in front of the arl. She wasn’t stupid.

No, it was unlikely to be the moral thing to do, but Eideard did get some amusement in the idea of betting on himself to hold his own new position. He couldn’t place the bet himself, that would be too obvious. But the ladies seemed interested in the idea.
"You give me the coin,” Maeva said, “and I'll double it. Not that you're hurting for it, I'm sure."
“Well, no, but that’s not the point, is it?” he said with a teasing tone as Lady Daire picked up the bottle. “I get to know I win a bet and you keep the profits to do with as you wish, hm?” It seemed fair. No, he didn’t need the coin, and there was no harm in it if he won back what he invested.
"After you, Maeva,” Lady Daire said, conceding the lead to their new dwarven companion. “I'm always game to learn something new about Denerim."
As was Eideard, but he’d already said as much, and didn’t feel he needed to add more to the idea as they headed out.
Maeva, for her part, seemed not only willing but eager to be their guide, a confidence in her step that perhaps was always there, but he had no way to know for certain. “I’m guessing you know the Palace District and Fort Drakon and all that well enough,” she said, not asked. A good observation. He couldn’t speak for Lady Daire, but Eideard spent a good deal of time at Drakon. “The docks are where the city gets its lifeblood. New people and things coming in and out all the time… tons of brothels and taverns for the sailors, and warehouses for their goods. It’s not really the best place to be after dark if you aren’t prepared to throw a few punches.”
Eideard was familiar with the concept of the docks, certainly, and understood the business side well enough. All from a paper perspective; profits and manifests and schedules. Stormgard was not a port itself, but they’d traveled to Highever enough as a child that he’d been warned plenty of staying out of the harbor districts. Docks were no place for a boy like him, Greer and Diarmad said. It stuck out in his mind, as they usually did not take much exception to where he wandered in his youth.
“I’m not afraid of a good fight,” he said thoughtfully, “but it wouldn’t exactly be my first play.” Unless it came to blows against the ladies, even if Eideard knew they were both likely as capable--possibly more so--as he in a fight. “But let’s start with that wager. It should be enough to be respectable, but not so much as to arouse suspicion.”

The two of them discussed the betting pools further, and Kiley just kept to herself. If Eideard wanted to bet on his own tenure, she certainly wouldn’t stop him.
“I’m guessing you know the Palace District and Fort Drakon and all that well enough,” Maeva said as she started to guide them out of the Gnawed Noble. She kept the bottle well in hand, but gestured towards both of them in case they wanted a drink from it once they were out on the street. “The docks are where the city gets its lifeblood. New people and things coming in and out all the time… tons of brothels and taverns for the sailors, and warehouses for their goods. It’s not really the best place to be after dark if you aren’t prepared to throw a few punches.”
“I try to stay away from Fort Drakon personally. No need to the guards to get to know my face as well as the ones in Amaranthine. For all I know some might have transferred and they didn’t like the terrors my sister and I were as teenagers.” No, that and she didn’t want to encounter a guard she might have befriended during one of her more secretive nightly journeys. Hopefully, with a few more drinks, her worry about Maeva recognizing her would be distant.
“I’m not afraid of a good fight, but it wouldn’t exactly be my first play.” Eideard chimed in, as they continued to follow Maeva’s lead. “But let’s start with that wager. It should be enough to be respectable, but not so much as to arouse suspicion.”
“Hopefully we won’t get in a row, but I have confidence we’ll come out on top if something should happen.” Her daggers were ever near, and while tipsy she felt she still had most of the control still on her faculties. Plus, she couldn’t very well be responsible for the Arl of Denerim getting wounded in the streets of Denerim. Her gaze moved to Maeva, “I’m guessing the bets are housed in one of the taverns you mentioned?”
