Growing up in the Anderfels, Palia learned how to survive early on, but it also made her yearn for luxuries the other countries had as well. Although she cares for her friends, she knows the grim truth that pragmatism trumps heroism, so in desperate cases she won't throw her own life to save another.
Despite all her choices, it may seem strange that Palia remains a devout Andrastian. Besides the fact that she's more than willing to indulge into hedonism when out of the Anderfels, she will never be arrogant and succumb to the sin of pride. Learning blood magic was a necessary evil for her, so she thinks the only way to repent to Andraste and The Maker is to make it her job to kill Darkspawn
Nordbotten is just like many of the other settlements in the Anderfels: ignored by the king, dependent on the Grey Wardens, and under constant threat of Darkspawn attack. One Warden in particular protected Palia's family. A family friend known as Bladis. Where her parents taught her how to survive and the Chant of Light, Bladis taught her about the military and tactics. As a mage, and a constant saving presence in Norbotten, he reduced the fears many had about mages in Thedas. This would have eventually played a vital role in Palia's life.
When Palia turned eight, her whole life turned around. She was playing outside when a pack of Darkspawn attacked. A stray genlock went after her, and she quickly took the high ground upon a barrel. The genlock was approaching her, and the next thing Palia knew was lighting had just shot out of her hands, killing the genlock. Bladis saw this and quickly rescued her. Upon bringing Palia home, he informed her parents what happened, and they allowed Bladis to train her.
Given a staff recovered by a darkspawn emissary, Palia began the path to control her magic. Her life seemed to run the status quo for the next few years. Once she got a hold of being a mage, Bladis began intensifying her teachings as a tactician and taught her all about demons and the dangers of being a mage.
Throughout all this time Bladis didn't let her fight or apply her tactics, because he thought she wasn't ready. At the age of seventeen she got fed up with it, and tried to fight a small group of darkspawn on the outskirts of the settlement. She had succeeded only to realize the massive horde that had followed. Unsure of what to do, she did the one thing Bladis told her never to do. Contracting with a Sloth Demon she used blood magic to wipe out the horde.
Little did she know, Bladis had been watching her the whole time. He reprimanded her and told her that having a blood mage among Nordbotten could destroy the trust of mages that he built, and that he had no other choice than to conscript her into the Wardens. Solemnly she accepted her fate and said her goodbyes to her family. Palia and Bladis traveled to Weisshaupt Fortress where she went through the joining and began her life as a Grey Warden.
She continued to follow under the command of Bladis, and worked within a squadron of Wardens, keeping her mistakes in mind, she promised Bladis that she would never use blood magic again unless it meant life or death. By the time she was twenty-one she became second in command in the squadron. One mission went horribly wrong when a cave collapse trapped them with an ogre. While the others set explosives to get out of the cave, Bladis offered his life to Palia so she could kill the ogre. Initially she was reluctant, but when the ogre grabbed hold of her, she had to choose between her life or his, and she chose hers. Using Bladis' blood she was able to slay the ogre. After returning from the mission she was dubbed the new leader of their squad and a funeral was held for Bladis.
Years passed by and she proved to be a valuable leader and tactician. So at the age of twenty-seven when she requested to relocate to Ferelden to help them with any post blight issues, the First Warden allowed it.
