At first appearance, he seems to be open, friendly and honest. He notices things about other people and comments on them, asks after them and their families, and the like. He does his very best to appear personable and outgoing to all who meet him.
He enjoys the thrill of a successful scheme. He uses his people skills to figure out who his next mark will be and when to strike. He views himself as smarter than most people, and therefore he feels justified in getting away with his crimes. After all, if his marks aren't smart enough to stop him before he strikes, he figures they get what they deserve.
Basil was born in Gwaren, but his parents traveled constantly, which helped keep their merchandise and inventory constantly rotating and kept repeat business strong. Basil began learning the trade as soon as he was old enough and excelled at it, but he was bored. He didn't enjoy just buying and selling goods. He yearned for more excitement in his life. He found it in a place most unexpected when he was personally swindled by a con man. The fellow had caught him off-guard with compliments and small talk and when Basil wasn't looking, stole the family's lock box.
Basil was angry at first, but then as he thought about it, he grew more and more impressed. Here was a challenge! Could he perform similar feats, without getting caught, even if he was to return to the same town? He decided to try. He already had the salesmanship skills and the charm!
It wasn't long before he had his first opportunity. An older gentleman needed assistance carrying his purchases home, and Basil eagerly offered to help the man. As they walked, Basil steered the conversation to the gentleman's home and how it was laid out, and how financial security was important in that day and age. The gentleman let slip the location of one of his stashes of coin, and Basil made note of it. The next night, just before his parents and he were to leave the village, he broke in to the man's house and robbed him blind. He never got caught. Success!
Basil was emboldened by his first success, and more followed. By the time he was twenty he was regularly cheating people out of their hard-earned money through various schemes. He managed to evade capture and the route the family took was long, so it was difficult to trace crime patterns to the traveling cart.
Basil's parents retired and left him the business when he was twenty-two, completely unaware of his second job. With the freedom that only working alone could bring, Basil planned more elaborate and risky schemes. He still travels around from village to village with his ox and wagon, ostensibly selling goods but really conning innocent people out of their life savings. When he is in a major city he will stable the ox and try different sorts of cons, posing as a noble or even a foreign dignitary. He finds great excitement in playing the game of deceit and finds that he seems well-suited to the task.
