Margaret presents a face to the world that is charming, demure, and generally quite likeable. She is a gracious hostess, understands proper etiquette, and speaks well on a great number of subjects. She also presents a pleasing visage and knows how to show off her slightly-better-than-average features to full advantage.
Beneath her demeanor, however, lurks a brilliant and devious mind. Margaret is constantly scheming, coming up with plans within plans within plans, and knows how to manipulate a situation to her benefit. She utilizes a network of informants, spies and paid scapegoats large enough to hide her schemes, and creates schemes elaborate enough that even the people working for her may not realize what she is doing.
Margaret is on a quest for personal power. She wants to increase her sphere of influence and rise up in the world to truly make her mark and change the face of Ferelden politics. She is determined to get there one way or another ...
Margaret was born as the only child of Bann Daveth Harling. She managed to survive childbirth, even though her mother perished during labor, and so from a young age she spent much, if not most, of her time with tutors and servants. She was always a bright child, fascinated with how things worked and good at reading people, and her tutors encouraged this in addition to her regular lessons in politics, etiquette, history and finances. She soaked up all her lessons and asked to learn more.
The bann taught his daughter some of the finer points as she was growing up, and as soon as her attention span was good enough to hold intelligent discussions on the subjects, he began to teach her the way of Ferelden politics. He had managed to retain his bannorn during the transition from Orlesian to Fereldan leadership, after all, and so he had excellent experience from which to draw. Bann Daveth did not care for King Maric, or for Loghain, and would have preferred that Ferelden stay under Orlesian rule. After all, if the Orlesians had won the war he would have been all but assured the arling of Amaranthine, or at least he believed it to be so. Instead, with Maric's victory over the Orlesians, the arling went to Rendon Howe instead. Bann Daveth found this intolerable, but at the time there was nothing he could do about it, other than gather information on Rendon and wait for a good opportunity. Unfortunately, as the years passed, Bann Daveth never did find a way to discredit the arl closest to his bannorn. Instead, he found, as did his daughter, that the old arl was just as crafty as himself. Gathering information to discredit the arl and push him out of his arling proved to be impossible.
When King Maric died, and Teyrn Bryce Cousland was put forth as a possible successor, Bann Daveth and Margaret joined the chorus of voices who supported the choice. Their reasoning held that if the teyrn should become king that his good friend Howe would become the new teyrn, or at worst, Eamon Guerrin would become the Teyrn of Highever and Redcliffe would open up for a bann to take. Again, their efforts were frustrated as the teyrn himself told the Landsmeet that he would prefer that Maric's son Cailan take the throne. With the teyrn's backing, Cailan became the next king of Ferelden.
Daveth and Margaret were furious at this outcome. They both felt that it was a move calculated by Teyrn Loghain, as a commoner, to rise above his station and place his bloodline on the throne. They found that they were not alone, but they were powerless at the time to change the course of history. That happened during the Blight, with all the unrest in the country after Cailan was killed with no named heir and eventually Loghain and Maric's bastard son Alistair were both put forward to take over the crown.
Daveth led his own forces during the Blight, leaving Margaret as his seneschal and heir. The bannorn of Mimel focused on the civil war and worked to increase their holdings, trying to sway freeholders to swear fealty to them as their neighbors became more and more embroiled in Loghain's attempts to recruit soldiers and take over lands. They decided that instead of fighting to shore up their resources and make as much gold as possible to position themselves for when the fighting ended. Their strategy was successful to a degree, and they found that their tax income was increased quite a bit as a result of their protection efforts. This strategy worked again during the aftermath of the Blight, as the arling of Amaranthine was hit particularly hard by darkspawn raids, but the bann himself was killed during one such raid. After he died, Margaret took over the bannorn officially and began to run it as her own.
Margaret was furious with King Alistair. First, he was completely unschooled in politics. Secondly, he gave what she viewed as her arling to Aedan Cousland, the so-called 'Hero of Ferelden', and let the Grey Wardens rule there. She pledged her fealty, but quietly worked behind the scenes to try to depose Aedan Cousland. Likewise, when rumors of Teyrn Fergus Cousland wanting to marry an elf surfaced, Margaret was furious all over again. How dare a pair of spoiled rich boys and an untried child of a king ruin her aspirations!
Margaret began to expand her information network and look for ways to discredit any, if not all, of these powerful men. At the same time, she did her best to communicate with all of them – after all, if she was charming enough, perhaps she could get into at least one of the men's good graces and obtain a position through marriage? It was not out of the realm of possibility. She is growing impatient however, and she is almost ready to begin her newest attempt to put in a bid for greater power ...
