Raul is the picture of civility and diplomacy. He is willing to be friendly to everyone and believe that whoever he meets has potential – as long as it benefits him. When working to achieve something, he is always cordial and has a great deal of patience. However, this is a front to achieve the best for his business, and Raul can be a cruel, ruthless man. Where he thinks intimidation and threats will achieve the desired result faster or more effectively than sweet words, he will not hesitate to use them. He does not respond well to not getting what he wants.
Despite this, he visits the Chantry twice a week to offer prayers for the success of his business and the health of his family. Raul believes in the Maker and offers the requisite words and time to be seen as a good, Maker-fearing citizen. It does not even slightly prevent him from being involved in the less scrupulous areas of trade, but he can offer incredibly loose interpretations of the Chant to frustrate his critics whenever he pleases.
Raul Madaffari was the first-born son of Barceal and Lucretia Madaffari. From the very beginning he had a privileged childhood; his family was a wealthy one and the young Raul could have, and got used to having, anything he wanted. He might have become lazy and simply relied on the endless generosity of his parents, but instead he took an interest in what his father did that earned the man equal amounts of respect and fear without holding a single title. Once Raul was able to write a letter in a reasonably fluid hand, Barceal began teaching him about the Madaffari family trade.
The Madaffaris were prominent in Antiva City for having investments in almost every area of business – including the slave trade. Barceal supplied likely-looking children to the Crows and anybody with a decent back to the Tevinter quarries. However, this was a long way from their only source of income, and before long Raul was being taught about the correct way to sustain trade in everything from dyes for cloth to lyrium. Barceal taught Raul about the importance of respecting his business rivals, particularly in a city full of assassins, and also to that end had placed the boy under the tutelage of a swordmaster from the age of ten. Raul trained with Mirrez every day for over fifteen years and has become adept at duelling, although largely he leaves swordwork to his bodyguards these days.
Raul has two sisters, both of whom have married. As with everything else, Barceal worked out the arrangement for them that would best suit the family and both have ended up with husbands that provide valuable connections for the Madaffaris. Raul also has the same arrangement – his wife Sophia was daughter to a rival merchant, and their marriage was part of a deal encouraging Sophia’s father to cease competing with Barceal. Raul has two sons and a daughter by the marriage and an amicable relationship with his wife. They don’t ask each other questions about what they get up to when Raul is away on extended business trips.
Not long after Raul’s daughter Amelia was born, Barceal handed the reins of the Madaffari interests to Raul and officially retired, although he still lends his wisdom to Raul when he feels it is required. Raul was thirty-five and had already established himself within the various trades his family had interests in, acting as his father’s voice on a number of business deals. Under his influence the family’s wealth grew further and he began expanding business into Orlais.
After the Blight, Raul’s various business links within Orlais had been firmly established. He elected not to be involved with Ferelden as he did not consider anything he might do there sound investment, but with nearly three years having passed and the country beginning to recover, he has decided to travel to the capital and see what opportunities - both lawful and not - are to be found. He is accompanied by his elven scribe, Timor, and his two bodyguards.
